Rj Rishi

RJ Rishi Kapoor recently interviewed Govindraj Ethiraj in his show ‘Mumbai Local’ on Monday, February 3rd, 2020.

Govindraj Ethiraj discuses about how we as citizens are not very aware of our own country and would be surprised to learn some lesser-known facts and how one can learn such facts through India Fact Quiz 2020. He explains how this particular quiz format helps to easily register information aquired in the quiz taker's memory. He talks about IndiaSpend being founded to use data as stories for public-interest in areas like health, education, gender equality, etc.

The objective of IFQ is to get young people between the ages of 17-25 years old to focus on data and evidence as a way of life. IFQ’s questions are similar to the ones in an IAS exam but are originally researched on topics covered through stories on IndiaSpend and DataBaaz.

He mentions that India Fact Quiz is a fun alternative way of learning in contrast to conventional methods.

Fair Observer

Govindraj Ethiraj, in conversation with Fair Observer, talks about how data truly affects our lives and about his goal to set aside misinformation from actual facts. The root cause of misinformation spreading is poor journalistic standards and ethics along political lines. Also, the increasingly widespread use of social media exacerbates the country’s social and sectarian divides.

Govindraj is the founder of IndiaSpend and DataBaaz. IndiaSpend and DataBaaz are two platforms that aim to challenge the status quo through data-based journalism. Supported by the Google News Initiative, they address critical issues like gender, healthcare and education through data-based stories and videos.

In this interview with Fair Observer, he also talks about the India Fact Quiz which aims to create awareness among India’s youth about data literacy. The quiz also aims to encourage fact-checking of information on India against the backdrop of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The idea is to test and challenge the mental biases and myths about the country by providing correct data and facts to participants of the quiz. We want to encourage our youngsters to have a more factful view of the world.

UNDER 25 SUMMIT – Bengaluru

As the knowledge partner of the Under 25 Summit, India Fact Quiz had an exclusive preview at the Jayamahal Palace, Bengaluru on 1st & 2nd February, 2020. The quiz took place 2 days before the launch of the summit, giving a sneak peek to the youngsters of what the Quiz is all about. The main idea behind this launch was to test & challenge the myths about India with positive yet captivating facts. There was a dedicated IFQ photobooth with quiz terminals and photo ops at the event on both days which became a hotspot for the youth to get their reality check.

Podcast

Cyrus Broacha recently hosted Govindraj Ethiraj on his podcast ‘Cyrus says’ but unlike its name, IFQ’s very own Govindraj was the one saying, asking, and reasoning.

He quizzed Cyrus Broacha on some of India's most captivating and surprising facts while discussing the importance of fact-checking in today’s world considering the need to be aware of the reality of our country as well as the world, especially for Generations Y and Z since they are the face of new India. In line with spreading this awareness and encouraging fact-checking, Govindraj introduces us to IFQ, an initiative by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Aksha which is led by Govindraj himself.

“Let’s all move together in this journey of using data to improve the quality of our lives,†says Govindraj as he lets us in on his past where he talks about his journey through the world of journalism and business. He reinstates why data is a valued resource and how our lives are dependent on legitimate data more than we might believe.

India Fact Quiz came to Econundrum, the Annual Economics Fest of St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai from 3rd January to 5th January 2020. For the first time students got a chance to catch a glimpse of the fact-based quiz - Battle of Facts, organized in the XIMR Conference Room, St. Xavier’s College. It encouraged the youth to reconsider existing biases with insightful facts and insightful data. The stall created at the college ground was open to all fest attendees and visitors. Students eagerly participated at the quiz terminals and won exciting IFQ merchandised and goodies.

IIM Bangalore – UTTHAN

India Fact Quiz organized an interactive quiz session at Utthan, the Public Policy Summit of IIM Bangalore on 10th November, 2019. The theme of the summit was Bridging the Gap of Innovative and Inclusive India. There was active participation from young and aspiring students for the quiz which witnessed 140 quizzers engaging in this exclusive interactive session. All participants had the chance to showcase their knowledge and expertise, addressing the socio-economic political developmental challenges in India. The winner received a reward of ₹ 15,000 from the team of India Fact Quiz.

Qrius

Govindraj Ethiraj’s interview has also been covered on Qrius where he discusses data-based journalism in India and also explains how misinformation can have serious repercussions. Govindraj, the founder of IndiaSpend and DataBaaz, explains that the need of the hour is data-based news & journalism.

In a country of 1.3 billion people, with over half a billion internet users and more than 400 TV channels, a lack of reliable information is a serious problem. According to a report by IndiaSpend, at least 24 people have been killed in 2018 alone by lynch mobs angered by fake social media stories.

In the interview, Govindraj talks about how DataBaaz and IndiaSpend use data to tell stories that matter, and how Indians can learn to spot fake news.

The idea behind launching India Fact Quiz was to test and challenge the mental biases and myths about India, by providing correct data and facts to participants. IFQ will encourage youngsters to have a more factful view of the world. India Fact Quiz will identify India’s curious and most factful minds, who value the importance of data in public discourse and create a new wave of factful citizen engagement. The overall aim is to blend data with emotion, which in turn will help people ask the right questions and demand higher quality of governance and accountability.
